The Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program is designed to facilitate the transition from the role of nursing student and nurses with less than one year experience, to the role of the professional nurse. The program supports personal and professional growth and development in the role of the professional nurse. The Nurse Residency Program also strengthens clinical competency, critical thinking, and clinical judgment, and provides the opportunity to collaborate with other participants and subject matter experts.
The Nurse Residency Program is considered an extension of unit orientation for newly licensed nurses and nurses with less than one year experience. The program consists of a welcome session and nine monthly topic sessions, including simulation-based learning experiences, hands-on activities, group discussion, socialization, networking, case studies and knowledge exploration.

- Cultural competency
- Evidence-based practice and strategies
- Hand-off communication
- Infection control
- Leadership skills
- Managing up
- Nursing practice act
- Patient safety
- Risk management
- Stress management and strategies
- Time management
Once hired by the Froedtert & MCW health network, graduate nurses and nurses with less than one year of clinical experience will be automatically enrolled into the program. Enrollment into the Nurse Residency Program is a requirement and part of the nursing orientation process.
Participants will attend the welcome session near the end of their unit orientation. Once unit orientation is complete, participants will start the Nurse Residency Program. Completion of unit orientation is determined by the new nurse, preceptor, leader and educator.
